Laura Mays has been a dermatology physician assistant since 2001. For her undergraduate studies, she attended the University of Central Florida, and then graduated from Butler University Physician Assistant program. During her sister's battle with stage 4 melanoma, Laura founded the CMD (Cynthia M. Disman) Melanoma Initiative and was the executive director from 1996-2006. Her sister was supposed to be the spokesmodel for the foundation, however sadly her sister died at age 30 from melanoma in 1997. The initiative was a non-profit organization focused on educating the community through local health fairs, presentations at school and corporate events, and lectures at multiple medical conferences across the country from 1999-2010. Additionally, she was the chairman of the St. Francis Run/Walk, a fundraiser for melanoma awareness, in 2000 and 2001.

Ms. Mays was awarded the American Academy of Dermatology's prestigious Gold Triangle Award in July 2004 in New York City, for her extensive efforts in melanoma public awareness and excellence in patient care. Over the years Laura has been a preceptor for dozens of physician assistant and nurse practitioner students, as well as an adjunct professor for the UCF nurse practitioner program.

Among clinical dermatology visits involving any condition of the hair, skin and nails, for children and adults, she also performs surgeries and aesthetic procedures like Botox and fillers.

With the assistance from the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Laura helped write "Cindy's Safe Sun" bill (SB772) and it was approved in 2006. This bill permitted and entitled all Florida school children to use sun protective items (sunblock, hats, and sunglasses) while outdoors on campus.

In July 2006, WKMG-TV Channel 6 Orlando had a news report about melanoma and a special interview with Ms. Mays on her dermatology practice and her sister's story. Laura's passion for melanoma awareness and prevention is the exact reason she has a large patient following. Her goal is to treat each patient like family. Laura is excited to join Manlio Dermatology and looks forward to delivering excellent patient care for you and your loved ones.
